L'operaio è diventato una merce ed è una fortuna per lui trovare un acquirente. E la domanda, da cui dipende la vita dell'operaio, dipende dal capriccio dei ricchi e dei capitalisti.
La sovrastruttura finanziario-borsistica con le caratteristiche che presenta nei paesi capitalisticamente avanzati favorisce non già il vigore competitivo ma un gioco spregiudicato di tipo predatorio, che opera sistematicamente a danno di categorie innumerevoli e sprovvedute di risparmiatori in un quadro istituzionale che di fatto consente e legittima la ricorrente decurtazione o il pratico spossessamento dei loro peculi.
Al posto degli uomini abbiamo sostituito i numeri e alla compassione nei confronti delle sofferenze umane abbiamo sostituito l’assillo dei riequilibri contabili.

Economics, even capitalist economics, assumes that there are desiring beings, but it does not ask why these beings desire one thing rather than another. Economists say that they are interested not in the reasons for people’s preferences, but in revealed preferences, i.e. preferences that are enacted. Economics does not ask about the reasons for these preferences – why would a mass of people prefer to buy cocaine rather than books or cruise vacations...? – it takes into account and calculates the preferences expressed, i.e., the exchange that is acted out. Exchange is an act, not a belief, and it is a more or less risky exchange.

I no global che l'hanno con i paesi ricchi perché sono troppo ricchi rispetto ai paesi poveri che sono troppo poveri. Ai no global non viene mai il dubbio che se non ci fossero i paesi ricchi quelli poveri sarebbero ancora più poveri.
Con la messa in valore del mondo delle cose cresce in rapporto diretto la svalutazione del mondo degli uomini. Il lavoro non produce soltanto merci; esso produce se stesso e il lavoratore come una merce.
Nella stessa proporzione in cui si sviluppa la borghesia, cioè il capitale, si sviluppa il proletariato, la classe degli operai moderni, che vivono solo fintantoché trovano lavoro, e che trovano lavoro solo fintantoché il loro lavoro aumenta il capitale. Questi operai, che sono costretti a vendersi al minuto, sono una merce come ogni altro articolo commerciale, e sono quindi esposti, come le altre merci, a tutte le alterne vicende della concorrenza, a tutte le oscillazioni del mercato.
